6 skills to success

Have you ever wondered some people are extremely successful and some people even after doing so much of hardwork can’t reach true success?

Neuroscience today has confirmed that “Focus Attention” is the real reason for one to become successful. “Focus attention” can only be achieved once you have complete control over your emotions and behavior.  This fundamental skill can be achieved through higher “Emotional Intelligence”

For Example, “You would rather deal with a person you like and trust, rather than someone you don’t like, even though that person offer’s you a better deal at a lesser price”

Emotional intelligence” (EQ) is a crucial skill for successful leaders and organizations. Based on research programs and proven results, it is seen that people with solid emotional intelligence are more likely to succeed than those with high IQs or Experience.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) was defined by Salovey and Mayer in 1990 as “the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to differentiate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.

“In fact, emotional intelligence accounts for nearly 90 percent of what moves people up the ladder when IQ and technical skills are roughly similar”

A number of studies have found EQ to be a good predictor of psychological well-being and work performance. As a result, these contributions have made EQ training become one of the major interventions to help people deal effectively with various life- and job-related stressors

Once addressing to the Governing Board of the American Union in April 1939 USA President Roosevelt said that Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds. They have within themselves the power to become free at any moment.”

Mindfulness-based Emotional intelligence or MEI is ability to be in the present moment and respond while understanding and managing one’s emotions. It goes deep into the essential element of human behavior that is separate from cognitive – intelligence.

“Emotional intelligence is known to be a fundamental element of effective leadership, and it can matter more than IQ.  It is critical to a leader’s success”

The leadership acumen can be divided primarily into SIX key elements which can determine your level of Emotional Intelligence.

1) Self-awareness:

Understanding and noticing your own emotions. Leaders who have greater certainty about their feelings have more insight, are better directors of their lives and make better decisions about things that affect them. A way to enhance self-awareness is to keep a reflection journal of your thoughts, moods, and situations that trigger frustration, anger or other strong emotions.

2) Self-Management:

Ability to control your own emotions and manage your response or reaction.  Self-control usually manifests itself as the absence of visible emotion. People who have good self-control generally remain calm even when stressed. They are able to think clearly under pressure and still make good decisions.

3) Motivation

Motivation is an integral part of self-management. It is utilizing emotions to service your goal. Leaders who remain in the “flow” accomplish greater performance through better effectiveness.

4) Purpose:

Once connected with inner drive leaders are able to understand Why, What, How, When.  Setting up goal aligned with purpose, propels the inner turbine to generate higher energy. Journaling the targets helps leaders to focus on them with reason and direction.

5) Social Awareness:

Man is a Social Animal. We have read this from our childhood but still, we are unable to understand its importance. Social awareness is our ability to perfectly understand the emotions of other people and comprehend what is genuinely going on with them.

To be a good leader one has to stop doing what he likes rather than diving deeper to gain the understanding of the social atmosphere and exercise social awareness.

  • Scan the environment without any judgment
  • Be aware of triggers that make you cheerful or anxious
  • Be mindful of people, words, situations that make you uncomfortable.
  • Pay more attention to non-verbal cues.
  • You may learn more from physiology than from oral communication.

6) Relationship Management Skills:

One of the biggest reason for the success of a leader is proficiency in managing relationships and building networks. Successful people with top social skills are intuitive and ingenious communicators.  Leaders develop genuine empathy towards other which build constant rapport and trust. They encourage, influence and motivate others and manage struggles resourcefully.

“Effective listening is a skill that reinforces all positive human relationships. Develop your listening skills as they are the building blocks of success”

To build this EQ muscle of Social Skill one must keep promises, give genuine appreciation, build connections through empathic bonds.  Learn the techniques for conflict management and effective listening.

Though mindfulness, persistent practice and with help of a good mentor, leaders can improve their emotional intelligence.
